Svartidauði – The Synthesis Of Whore And Beast

(Daemon Worship Productions, 2014)

Iceland’s Svartidauði have received a lot of praise (at least) in the few recent years, putting out Black Metal music of truly atmospheric and Psychedelic nature, besides playing live with respected names actively as well.

This Ep features two songs of melodic yet murky modern Black Metal. Among the stuff released by many labels these days, dealing in Spiritual and Occult topics, it’s actually not easy for me to find bands of truly unique or personal quality, but Daemon Worship has indeed released stuff from a few honestly good bands, Svartidauði of course being one of these.

Although there is some of the Avantgarde chaos of bands like Deathspell Omega (something that cannot be left unmentioned these days it seems) clearly present here, the guitars are actually quite clear in their melodies, melancholic, intense and Psychedelic at the same time, and although the drummer uses a lot of awesome fills, small details in his technical slow jamming and nicely loose playing in his fast blasts, there is a lot of control and clear structures in the arrangements of the songs. My favourite aspect of the music is however the low and aggressive yelling vocals, sounding like some ancient Icelandic God of Chaos preaching his message of doom from the depths of an erupting volcano. Often going higher and more intense in execution, with the skills of a great vocalist, there is a tremendous amount of feeling present in the music because of the vocals (not to undermine the role of the other instruments one bit). Definitely one of the best vocalists in todays Black Metal.

The sounds of this release are indeed murky and bassy enough to give a very deep and ritualistic feeling to the overall experience, yet clear enough to get everything out of the instruments. Only 16 minutes in length, this Ep offers Psychedelia of such proportions, the short length is not of importance in this case. A highly recommended release to all fans of atmospheric and Psychedelic yet aggressive Black and Death Metal! I’m waiting for the next full-length release with much anticipation!
